The Government College of Home Economics
The Government College of Home Economics, Lahore was founded in 1955 to create a distinguished center of excellence for teaching and research in the field of Home Economics. Since its inception, the college has been affiliated with the University of the Punjab. It awards six years integrated BS degree. The college is also offering M.Phil and Ph.D programmes in five major areas of Home Economics.Home Economics is an encompassing field involving many areas of subject matter and a wide variety of experiences. Food and Nutrition, Textiles and Clothing, Art and Design, Human Development and Family Studies, Housing, Home Management and Interior Design are the different areas of Home Economics. A close relation exists among the areas of Home Economics as well as between Home Economics courses and supportive courses taught outside the field. The Physical and Social Science, Applied Art, Psychology and Philosophy have direct and important contribution in the field of Home Economics. Focus is on conceptual and applied research.

Since its inception the college has been affiliated with the University of the Punjab for the award of a bachelors degree of four years integrated BS course and two years M.Sc. Program in five major areas of Home Economics, The college is also offering Post Graduate and Graduate diplomas. M. Phil and Ph. D programmes are also established. Home Economics is the study of home making and its relation to the community. It is not related to the problems of food and clothing, it now includes many aspects of family relations, child development, parental education, consumer awareness, institutional management and interior designing. Specialized terms are used for its sub divisions. The focus is on training in needle work, cookery, the management of the household, food preservation, both from practical as well as from a scientific viewpoint. Emphs is placed on the social, economic and aesthetic aspects. Home Economics is taught as a profession. It parallels the general development of education of women. The last half of the twentieth century saw the development of Home Economics as a formal training. The aim is to develop a realization among women that the obligations and opportunities for women extend beyond the home. The desire for this discipline is to enhance management of households and to try to make family and home more effective. This programme aims at achieving optimal and sustainable living and shows that Home Economics has the potential to be influential in all sectors of society, intervening and transforming political, social, cultural, ecological and economic spheres at global levels. This is driven by the ethics of the profession, based on the values of caring, sharing, justice and responsibility.Graduates of this programme in Home Economics are eligible to join many organizations such asfood companies, utility companies, supermarkets andhome-equipment manufacturers. Some Home Economists are free lance entrepreneurs, others can also work in media, advertising product promotion and testing.A large number of Home Economists teach in high schools and work in community related activities. They can also be hired as family and credit counselors. Home Economists advise on food choices, fashion, activity patterns and healthy weight, in this way they contribute to the well-being of the family and community.
